A Classic Clare Valley Shiraz
Jim Barry The McRae Wood Shiraz 2020 is a full-bodied Australian red wine produced from 100% Shiraz grown across the Barry family’s Clare Valley vineyards.
The wine takes its name from Duncan McRae Wood, from whom Jim and Nancy Barry purchased a 70-acre property in 1964. The McRae Wood Shiraz was first released in 1992 and was created as a rich, intense expression of Clare Valley Shiraz, drawing on selected low-yielding parcels from the family’s vineyards.
Matured for 12 months in French oak, the 2020 vintage combines generous dark fruit with savoury complexity, firm structure and a polished, lingering finish.
Tasting Notes
The nose is dark-fruited and brooding, revealing aromas of ripe plum and blackberry alongside sweet earth, hawthorn, oak spice and fresh liquorice.
On the palate, the wine is smooth and composed, with fine, sinewy tannins flowing steadily from beginning to end. Dark fruit is layered with elegant floral notes, savoury spice and subtle oak, leading into a classic, long and brooding finish.
Why You’ll Love It
The McRae Wood Shiraz is ideal for customers who enjoy bold Australian reds but still appreciate freshness, balance and structure.
It offers the depth and concentration expected from Clare Valley Shiraz without feeling overly heavy. Its combination of dark fruit, savoury herbs, spice and fine tannins makes it enjoyable with food now, while also giving it the potential to develop further in the cellar.
