An Icon of Clare Valley Shiraz
Jim Barry The Armagh Shiraz 2021 is the flagship Shiraz of Jim Barry Wines, produced entirely from the family’s historic Armagh Vineyard in Clare Valley, South Australia.
The vineyard was planted by Jim Barry in 1968 on a north-west-facing slope near the township of Clare. Its low-fertility soils and naturally low yields produce small, intensely flavoured grapes with the concentration and structure required for long-term ageing.
Named after the nearby hamlet of Armagh, which was established by Irish settlers in 1849, this single-vineyard Shiraz has become one of the Barry family’s most important wines and a celebrated expression of Clare Valley terroir.
Tasting Notes
The 2021 vintage opens with expressive aromas of vibrant blueberry, redcurrant and dark purple fruit, layered with violet, sage, liquorice and Kalamata olive.
The palate is rich and concentrated, unfolding with blackberry, cranberry and mulberry alongside orange peel, dark spices and savoury herbs. Fine sandy tannins provide structure, while lively acidity brings freshness and balance.
A long, expansive finish reveals lingering notes of thyme, clove, star anise and mountain herbs. Powerful yet refined, this is a wine of remarkable energy, elegance and precision.
Why You’ll Love It
The Armagh 2021 is made for collectors and serious wine lovers seeking a premium Australian Shiraz with both immediate intensity and exceptional cellaring potential.
Its generous dark fruit, complex savoury character and finely structured tannins make it impressive today, while its balance and concentration allow it to develop beautifully over several decades.
